Tipke su povezane čekićima koji udaraju u graduirani skup metalnih (obično čeličnih) ploča ili šipki ovješenih preko drvenih rezonatora. Jedno od najpoznatijih djela koje koristi čelestu je „Ples vile šećerne šljive“ Čajkovskog iz Orašara.
